Answer: Yes, Jesus really died at Calvary. This was prophesied by David in Psa. 16:10 (NASB): “For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol [death]; Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay.”
Isaiah prophesied about our Lord’s death in Isa. 53:8,9,12 (NASB): “He was cut off out of the land of the living … (9)His grave was assigned with wicked men, Yet He was with a rich man in His death … (12) Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great, And He will divide the booty with the strong; Because He poured out Himself to death, And was numbered with the transgressors.”
During his final journey to Jerusalem, Jesus told his disciples that he would both die and be raised from the dead. “From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day.” (Matt. 16:21 NASB)
The apostle Paul writes in Heb. 9:27,28 (NASB): “And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment, (28) so Christ also, having been offered once [in death] to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him.” Jesus had to die for his earthly life to take Adam’s place under the penalty of death.
Jesus died once for all [for Adam] as the apostle Paul writes in Heb. 10:10,12,14 (NASB): “By this will [God’s will] we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. … (12) but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, SAT DOWN AT THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD, … (14) For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.” What Jesus offered was his perfect human life as a ransom for Adam.
