Overall Plan

Chart of the Ages

God’s overall plan of salvation is expressed in Psa. 90:3 (NASB): “You turn man back into dust And say, ‘Return, O children of men.'” God’s plan began with the creation of the universe. (Gen. 1:1) Then He created our first parents, Adam and Eve, perfect and placed them in the garden of Eden. He instructed them to not eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. (Gen. 2:16,17) However, God knew that rebellion lurked in Satan’s heart and because of man’s lack of experience with sin, Satan would lead man to transgress. (Isa. 14:12-15)

God allowed this happen knowing that the ensuing experience would teach men and angels the exceeding sinfulness of sin and the vital importance of obedience to his own principles of truth and righteousness without blotting out either man’s or the angel’s opportunity for everlasting life.

Even while God allowed sin to be introduced by Satan and to prevail among mankind for a period of time, God’s plan included the provision for man’s recovery from sin through the death, resurrection and kingdom of His dear son, our Lord Jesus. The plan describes our Lord as the lamb slain from the foundation of the world. “Knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, (19) but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ. (20) For He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you.” (1 Peter 1:28-20 NASB)

God’s promised recovery of man is described in God’s oath to Abraham following Abraham’s faith in offering his son Isaac as a sacrifice. “Indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies. (18)  In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.” (Gen 22:17,18 NASB)

God’s plan of recovery will produce two seeds or offspring. The spiritual seed (“stars of heaven”) begins with our resurrected Lord Jesus but also includes the faithful followers of Jesus who are granted a spiritual reward – “glory and honor and immortal, eternal life.” (Rom. 2:7 NASB)  Paul writes in Gal. 3:29 (NASB), “If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise.”

They are joined together with Jesus in heaven to be “kings and priests” whose role will be to reign over the earth and bring Israel and mankind back from the grave and bring them back to perfection, harmony and peace with God as the earthly seed mentioned in the oath to Abraham (“sand of the seashore”). (Rev. 1:6; 5:10)

This plan of salvation reveals both the wisdom, justice, love and power of our Heavenly Father and the great character and faithfulness of our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus. How blessed we are to have such a loving God and to receive an insight into His plans and purposes.
