God made two great oaths that serve as the core of His plan of salvation. The first was His oath to Abrahamic to provide a home and a seed for Abraham and through that seed bless all the families of the earth.
We find this oath expressed after Abraham followed God’s command to offer his only son Isaac as a sacrifice on the mountains of Moriah. “By Myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son, (17) indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies. (18) In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.” (Gen. 22:16-18 NASB)
God’s oath was to develop two offspring of Abraham, a spiritual offspring (stars of heaven) that would bless the earthly offspring (sand of seashore). In Galatians, the apostle Paul explains that the spiritual seed is Christ and his church. (Gal. 3:16, 29) The earthly seed is the nation of Israel and the rest of mankind. (Gen. 28:13-14, Isa. 2:2-5; Ezek. 16:54,60-62)
But to accomplish the first oath, God made a second oath. “The LORD has sworn and will not change His mind, “You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.” (Psa. 110:4) God’s oath was to make Jesus a high priest after the order of Melchisedek giving Christ both the power and authority to release mankind from Adam condemnation, bring them back into harmony with God and grant the human family everlasting life.
The apostle Paul explains this in Heb. 5:8-10 (Philips): “Son though he was, he had to prove the meaning of obedience through all that he suffered. Then, when he had been proved the perfect Son, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who should obey him, being now recognised by God himself as High Priest “after the order of Melchizedek.” The second oath expressed God’s commitment to develop the spiritual seed as a priesthood that would fulfill God’s first oath – to bless all the families of the earth.
